Built in 1907, Birdsong is steeped in the history and culture of Hawaii.  This three bedroom, two bath, two story, solid redwood house is nestled on 2.5 acres on Tantalus, adjacent to a conservation district (and hiking trails) and is an officially recognized historic home.  Both interior and exterior walls are redwood plank in a unique Craftsman style design.

It sits on a steeply sloped lot, has a cruciform design plan, and a hipped roof. The interior features a brick fireplace, board and batten walls and ceilings, completely updated kitchen, solid teak floors, and bracketed window sills with woodwork detail not seen in modern houses.

Birdsong has been perfectly restored with a redesigned kitchen featuring new appliances and a gas cooktop island looking over Diamond Head. A central fireplace anchors the home, to radiate heat in the winter months, when clouds float around the house and rainbows appear on the doorstep.  The world-famous songbird, the "shama" can be heard every day.  Native koa and ohio lehua trees abound.  Views include the entire Manoa Vally, Diamond Head, Waikiki and Kahala.  One can watch both sunrise and sunset  over the ocean from within the house.

Reviews of This Property

"We could not believe how gorgeous the house was when we first arrived. It is so spacious, and is beautifully kept with a love for detail that I have only seen on very rare occasions.  It serves up fantastic views of Manoa valley, the mountains, Diamond Head and the ocean.  Just 200 yards from the house is a well-maintained trail system that takes you around Tantalus mountain or down into the Manoa valley. The fact that you are actually living in a nature preserve area means this home is surrounded by a state park with all the beauty of Oahu’s nature right at your doorstep.  It goes without saying that the hosts were the loveliest people you can think of and that they did everything for us to make us feel at home and comfortable. In short, we love the island, the location, the hosts, and already reserved a time slot for coming back to this historic house!"  Fredrik S.
